U12 Hawks Take Second Place in New England Regional Tournament
by posted 08/10/2011

The U12 Hawks Softball team, who were crowned the Connecticut State Champions two weeks earlier, traveled to Pittsfield, Massachusetts on July 22 thru July 24th to try to capture the title of New England Regional Champions.  The Hawks, lead by Head Coach Monica Mueller, gave it their all and brought home the runner up trophy.

The tournament began with two pools of four teams, playing a round robin, and ending with a four team double elimination.  On Friday, the Hawks beat Randolph, Vermont 11-0 and beat Halifax, Massachusetts 3-2.  On Saturday morning , for the final pool play game, Newtown lost 1-0 to Rochester, NH. With three teams having 2-1 records at the end of pool play, Newtown found themselves as the number one seed in their pool based on tie breakers.

The Double Elimination Round began Saturday afternoon with four teams still left. Newtown, Halifax, Stamford, and Litchfield, NH. Newtown first squared off against its in-state rival Stamford.  The Hawks came back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3.    After Litchfield beat Halifax, Newtown would play Litchfield in the winner's bracket final to get into the championship round.  Newtown again came back after trailing early to get a thrilling 5-4 victory.  The Hawks now awaited the winner of the loser's bracket Sunday afternoon. Halifax eliminated Stamford on the final game on Saturday.

Sunday morning Halifax beat Litchfield to win the loser's bracket and get into the championship round.   Now Newtown would only need to win once to clinch the title, but it was not to be.  Halifax gained a 5-1 victory in the first game Sunday afternoon.   Then in a winner-take-all final game, the two teams were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning.

Halifax was able to push a run across and held Newtown in the top of the 6th to seal the victory, the New England Regional Championship and an invitation to the U12 Babe Ruth World Series in Alabama.

The Newtown U12 Hawks knew they had given it their all and most importantly had a terrific weekend, both on the field and at the Hotel, that they will remember for a long time.  The coaches and parents of the Newtown Hawks were extremely proud of all of the girls.

During the weekend of July 15th-17th, the U10 Newtown Hawks Girls Softball Travel Team, bruisedand battered, beat the heat and held it together to take 2nd place in the Babe Ruth State Tournament held in New Milford.

On Friday, the Hawks got off to a slow start and lost their first game in an upset to the Southbury Heat with a score of 10-8.  In the 1st inning Rachel O. and Joy M. teamed up to drive in the first 3 runs but Southbury returned fire and tied it back up in the bottom of the inning.   Southbury outscored the Hawks by 2 runs in the remaining innings which led to the 10-8 loss.  Abby P. went 2 for 3 including a hard flyout to shortstop and Julia A. ripped a double and drove in her first RBI with her first at bat with the team.

On Saturday, the beginning of double elimination, the Hawks offense, refocused after Fridays Nights loss, rebounded and tore up the field with a 22-1 revenge victory against Southbury.  The Hawks started off slow with no runs in the first 2 innings but soon thereafter started pouring on the heat with 7 runs in the 4th and 13 runs in the  5th.  Allie E. held Southbury to only 4 hits while Shannon C. knocked in 4 RBIs and Jacklin G., Rachel O. and Zoe B. each drove in 3 runs a piece.  Jaclyn M. who drew 3 walks, was hit by a pitch, stole 4 bases and, scored 4 of the runs.

In the second game of the day against New Milford, the Hawks’ bats, still smoking after the Southbury game, continued to rip hit after hit with 17-4 victory.  In the 2nd inning Jacklin G. got the delayed steal sign and stole home following the throw back to the pitcher from the catcher.  Tess M. and Zoe B. teamed up to drive in 9 of the 17 runs, Rachel D., Jaclyn G. and Allie E. each drove in 2 runs a piece.

On Sunday, the Hawks started out their long day with a 10am game against the 2nd seed Stamford Stars.  The game was pretty tight with an 8-9 score going into the 5th when Stamford pickedup 3 more runs.  The Hawks could not get any additional runs in the top of the last inning and lost by a score of 8-12.  Amanda B. got on base each of her 4 plate appearances, stole home and drove in 2 runs.  Rachel D. and Joy M. battled well on defense.

In the second game of the day at noon, the Hawks met up with the Norwalk Zoomers.  The entire game was tight but the Hawks held tight in the excessive heat and pulled out a 9-7 win.  Shannon C. went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI, Rachel D. stole home on a wild pitch, Amanda B. went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Julia A. knocked in 2 runs with 4th inning double.  Stand in player Olivia M. grabbed a walk and stole a base at her first at bat with the Hawks.

With the win against the Zoomers the Hawks immediately headedto the State Finals against Stamford.  It was the 3rd straight game of the day for the Hawks in the 95 degree heat.  In the 2nd inning Tess M. hit a line drive double down the 3rd base line which drove in Allie E..  Amanda B. followed it up with a single which brought in another run.  The Hawks offense was stifled during the 3rd and 4th inning, but in the 5th inning Tess M. and Shannon C. each reached 1st on a singles.  With 2 on, Zoe B. hit a triple down the left field line which drove in Tess and Shannon.  The 5th inning rally was not enough to overcome Stamford and the Hawks lost by a score of 7-15.

The Hawks team is managed by parent Head Coach Scott Beals and parent Assistant Coaches, Keith Cheh, Jeff Murabek, Jeff Moccio, and team photographer Sue Gouveia.   Sarah D. was absent from the Tournament.

The team is sponsoredby; Sabrina Style, Katherine's Kitchen, The Villa Resturant, Landworks LLC, DD Electric LLC, Holmes Fine Gardens LLC, Newtown Mobil, and Coalition Equipment & Services all of Newtown, Choice Security Systems LLC of Bridgeport, and Dental Associates of Connecticut.

The Hawks wrap up the year with the Fairfield County Fastpitch Softball League tournament and the Central Valley Fastpitch League tournament.

12U Newtown Hawks WIN Babe Ruth State Championship!!!

U12 Newtown Hawks WIN Babe Ruth State Championship!!!

The Newtown Hawks U12 Softball team played seven games on the weekend of July 9-10 including 4 straight wins on Sunday, to win the Babe Ruth Softball Connecticut State Championship.  The win sends the Hawks to Pittsfield, Mass for the New England Regional Babe Ruth Tournament on July 22-24.

On Saturday Newtown began the tournament by beating Milford 12-0 but then
got tripped up the following game against Brookfield 9-7 and therefore ended up having to fight their way out of the losers bracket.  Newtown completed their first day’s games with a 13-1 win over New Milford. On Sunday the Hawks would have to win 4 games in a row to win the championship – and that’s just what they did.  They started off with a rematch against a revenge-minded Milford team.  This time it was a low scoring affair with Newtown pulling out a walk-off 3-2 victory in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Newtown then paid back Brookfield for the loss on Saturday with a 15-1 victory.  Newtown would now have to defeat Stamford twice to win title. The Hawks started out with bats on fire as they came away with a 10-1 victory.  In the final winner-take-all game, where runs were hard to come by, Newtown won the State Championship by a 3-1 score.
